Also called 'substantive editing', comprehensive editing is performed on a completed draft. It involves a close reading of the manuscript, and may include everything from the alteration of grammar and punctuation to substantial rewrites and revisions.

 

The editor might also make recommendations concerning content organization, clarification of passages or ideas, and the creation of transitions between various chapters or events.
